Tips From The Trade: The Insiders Give Advice
This week, I was thinking a lot about how many experts I am surrounded by as a designer. Our electrician has 20+ years of experience with strictly lighting, our cabinet maker builds massive custom projects precise down to the inch and our wood and tile installer makes the whole process look effortless when we all know it’s not.
After all of these years and all of these projects, what’s their best advice? Wouldn’t you like to know? Well now you can! I asked a few of them Q and A’s and would love to share them with you. I hope this helps as you pull together budgets and decide on your priorities for making your home the dreamy oasis you wish for!
MAURICIO, CUSTOM CABINET MAKER
Q: What is the best advice you would give someone who is wanting to redesign their cabinets?
A: I think soft close doors and hinges for everything is my best advice.
HERMAN, LET THERE BE LIGHT ELECTRIC
Q: What is the best advice you would give someone about lighting in a home?
A: Make sure you have adequate lighting in your home especially your kitchen and bathrooms.
Q: What is one lighting feature or technique you think is pretty cool that you would use in your own home?
A: Get rid of your old incadescent bulbs throughout your house and install LED bulbs. They are much brighter and more energy efficient and you can pick from the color spectrum anywhere from 2700, 3000, 4000, 5000 and 6000 kelvins. Kelvins is the color of light. I like 4000K. It’s not too dull and not too bright.
JOSH MILLER, WOOD FLOOR + TILE CRAFTSMAN (ALL AROUND REMODEL GURU)
Q: What is best advice you would give someone regarding flooring?
A: The one word of advice I could give is if you set out to do continuous flooring and get a quote but it’s too much — wait and save. In the end it will end up better.
Q: What’s one installation you have done that you think is pretty cool that you would do in your own home?
A: Putting up beams and tearing out walls.
As long as we are talking about tips of the trade, I will give a few interior design tips to round out this useful blog post!
RACHEL, RACHEL WINSTON DESIGN
Q: What is the real benefit of hiring an Interior Designer vs doing research online and shopping retail?
A: An Interior Designer’s sources can end up saving a client money (especially in Dallas) because we have Dallas Market and we often get better pricing. Also, you have access to design sources that the rest of the public doesn’t have!
Q: What is the biggest bang for your buck when updating your home?
A: Besides a kitchen or master bath redesign I would say floor and ceiling. Invest in lighting and rugs for an updated, fresh new look.
