Care & Maintenance
Carpet
Carpet cleaning is just like exercise! If you get into a routine and keep it up, you will see great results and feel better for it. Products that rate highly on CRI’s Seal of Approval (SOA) program are your assurance that you will clean correctly the first time (more on the SOA program below). Here are four simple steps to keep your carpet clean and looking great:
- Vacuum high traffic areas daily, and everywhere according to a vacuuming schedule, using an SOA/Green Label-approved vacuum.
- Clean spots and spills quickly with products that do not damage the carpet or cause it to resoil quicker.
- Professionally deep clean your carpets every 12 to 18 months to remove embedded dirt and grime.
- Stop dirt at the door by using mats outside and in, taking your shoes off when you enter the house and changing your air filters to reduce airborne dust particles.
Hardwood Flooring
Polyurethane Flooring
- To reduce wear, use area rugs at work stations, dining areas, and at heavily traveled areas and pivot points (i.e. stair landings, room entries, etc.), especially if there is a large family or indoor pets.
- Use dirt-trapping walk-off mats at all exterior doors to keep sand, dirt, grit, grease, and oil outside.
- Sweep or vacuum regularly, since built-up grit can damage the finish. The vacuum head must be a soft brush or felt type. Be certain the wheels of the vacuum are clean and do not damage the flooring. Do not use a vacuum with a beater bar head.
- NEVER mop or flood floor with water or other products. This can severely damage the flooring.
- Thoroughly clean and rinse used and even new sponge mops to eliminate detergents.
- Remove spills promptly using a soft cloth and cleaning products (ProCare Citrus Floor Cleaner, Pro-Coat products). See below for regular maintenance.
- IMPORTANT: Do not use oil soaps, liquids, or paste wax products or other household cleaners that contain lemon oil, tung oil, or ammonia. The warranty does not cover damaged caused by non-recommended products.
- Keep pet’s nails trimmed and paws clean and free of dirt, gravel, grease, oil, and stains.
- Office chairs with rollers must have a hardwood floor approved breathable mat over the floor covering to prevent scratching and roll marks. Excessive rolling will damage the finish over time.
- Place protective pads beneath furniture legs and feet to reduce scratches and dents.
- Use a dolly and protective sheets of plywood when moving heavy objects, furniture, or appliances.
- Make certain furniture casters are clean, operate properly, and approved for hardwood floors.
- Remove shoes with spiked or damaged heels before walking on floor.
- Exposure to the sun and its UV rays accelerates the oxidation and aging of wood and fabrics. This causes the stain and/or wood to fade and/or change color. We recommended rearranging rugs and furniture periodically so the floor ages evenly.
- Close drapes/blinds where excessive sunlight hits the floor. Heat and light can cause furniture, carpets, wallpaper, curtains, and floors to fade or discolor over time. The warranty does not cover damage from the sun and its UV rays.
Hard Wax Oil Floors
- Daily cleaning of your oiled hardwood floor is performed by sweeping, vacuuming or dust mopping.
- Wipe up spills immediately with a lightly dampened cloth, and then follow up with a Regal Hardwoods recommended cleaning product.
- Always use Regal Hardwoods recommended care products (Woca Natural Soap & Woca Oil Refresher).
- For stubborn stains, lightly dampen a soft cloth with a Regal Hardwoods recommended hardwood floor cleaner. Allow the cleaner to set on top for 30-40 seconds, then lightly agitate and remove. Apply directly to the trouble spot and repeat as necessary. If the stain persists, please contact a professional floor covering repair expert.
- Close drapes/blinds where excessive sunlight hits the floor. Excessive heat may cause wax to become sticky.
- Never use petroleum-based cleaners on water-based finishes.
- Never use alcohol-based cleaning products, as it will dissolve the hard wax oil.
- We highly recommend contacting a professional floor covering repair expert to address gouges and/or scrapes.
- After installation, we recommend applying a coat of Woca Natural Soap.
- Woca Natural Soap is made up of emollients extracted from soy beans and coconut oils, which also retain the moisture in the floor, just as quality soap would for your hands. As they dry and form an invisible film on the surface, the floor receives added protection against wear and dirt. Natural Soap is only to be used for cleaning and maintenance of oiled, waxed, and soaped surfaces.
Tile
Stone
Marble, granite, travertine, limestone and slate are quarried products. Stones are a natural honed or polished rock, not factory-made or fired. No two pieces are alike and there are inherent variances in all stone. These characteristics may be color and shade variations, irregular markings, voids, pitting, veins, and differences in density causing sheen variations. It is a standard practice to repair some of these variations by one or more of the following methods; waxing, grinding or filling. Due to normal wear, cracks and voids may appear; these can be readily repaired using floor grout and/or epoxy. All of these variations and characteristics are common and present, to some degree. However, these characteristics are part of the natural beauty of the stone and will not impair the function or wearing qualities of the material. To avoid damage caused by tracked-in dirt, place floor mats inside and outside of exterior entryways. Sweep or vacuum regularly to prevent loose dirt from abrading your floor. Tracked-in dirt is abrasive and can mar the flooring surface.
A regular maintenance regimen will help your natural stone be more resistant to scratching and wear. Natural stone, especially polished stone, is sensitive to harsh chemicals. We recommend wiping or mopping stone surfaces with warm water or a pH-balanced neutral cleaner. Rinse the surface thoroughly after washing and dry with a soft cloth. Change the rinse water frequently. Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface. Do not use vinegar or any cleaners containing acids or strong alkaline agents. Whether a stone product is sealed or unsealed, all spills must be cleaned up immediately to avoid possible staining and acid burns from citrus juices or acidic liquids. Acid-based foods, such as citrus or tomatoes, can etch into the polish of more delicate stones, like marble and onyx. Do not place hot items, such as pots and pans, on any stone. As a safety precaution, use coasters on countertops. To prevent alkaline and soap-scum buildup, use squeegees in shower areas. Other large surfaces, such as flooring, are best cared for by a licensed maintenance company to protect the natural stone.
PORCELAIN & CERAMIC
To avoid damage caused by tracked-in dirt, place floor mats inside and outside of exterior entryways. Sweep or vacuum regularly to prevent loose dirt from abrading your floor. Tracked-in dirt is abrasive and can mar the flooring surface. Normal maintenance for glazed or unglazed floor tile is damp mopping with a pH-balanced neutral cleaner and warm water. Thoroughly rinse and dry the surface after washing. You should not use a detergent on glazed tile, since soap film will give a dull appearance to the tile. No need to wax, polish or buff. Simply wiping glazed tile with a damp sponge or mop will maintain the luster. Do not use scouring powders; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface of the tile. Do not use vinegar or any cleaners containing acids or strong alkaline agents.
It is recommended to clean up spills on the tile as soon as possible. Use floor protectors on furniture legs. Do not push or pull your furniture or appliances across the floor without first protecting. To protect countertop surfaces, use coasters, trivets or placemats. Should your porcelain or ceramic tile become broken, chipped or damaged, it is possible to have it repaired. It is highly recommended to keep extra tiles from the original installation for future repairs.
Cambria
Maintaining Cambria is easy.
Simply wash with a soft cotton cloth and warm water, use a mild soap if desired.
DO NOT expose, in use or otherwise, Cambria to abrasive or strong alkaline or acid or free radicals or oxidizers or the like (whether high, neutral or low pH) cleaners. Various chemicals are corrosive and/or erosive in their ability to attack any structure including Cambria. Be very aware of these potential damages to your surface.
Cambria IS NOT heat proof, chemical proof or fracture proof in any form. Be aware of damaging exposure to these potential damaging acts upon your Cambria.
DO NOT use or expose Cambria to such products including, but not limited to bleach, oven cleaners, Comet®, Soft Scrub®, SOS®, products with pumice, batteries, paint removers, furniture strippers, tarnish or silver cleaners, or the like. DO NOT use abrasive or harsh scrub pads. DO NOT apply any sealers, penetrants or topical treatments to Cambria under any circumstances. Such products will wear off and cause the gloss to appear dull or inconsistent. Contact Cambria for further information by calling 1-866-Cambria or by completing the customer support form.
- Cambria is pure natural quartz. Variation in the natural stone (quartz) color, pattern, size, shape and shade are inherent and unique characteristics to be expected with this Product. This does not affect the Product performance in any manner.
- Color blotches are intended and designed into many designs to enhance the natural beauty. Samples are small select cuts from a slab; they do not exhibit all the characteristics of a design and therefore are not fully representative of what will be installed. Product will not be replaced due to these variations.
- Cambria is durable and more resistant to surface damage than other stone. However, all stone can be damaged by force and no stone is chip-proof. Objects hitting edges particularly at sinks or dishwashers may cause chips. Though a minor knife slip will dull the knife and not harm Cambria, no stone surface is scratch-proof. Surface markings are more visible on monotone designs than multi-colored surfaces.
- Cambria is not a seamless Product, seams are visible. Where there are seams the product pattern and shade can change.
- Natural stone surfaces can be damaged by sudden and/or rapid change of temperature especially near the edges, as well as direct and/or sustained heating of the top. Cambria may not withstand the direct transfer of heat from pots and pans and other cooking units such as electric frying pans and griddles, and some crockpots or roaster ovens and heat lamps. Therefore, the use of a hot pad or trivet is always recommended to prevent heating the Product.
- Cambria is not a structural support Product. 2cm and 3cm Cambria thicknesses are for countertops and must be supported. 1cm thicknesses are for surface finishes such as walls, tub and shower surrounds and fireplaces; horizontal applications such as a tub deck must be completely supported as well.
- Semi-polished finishes (1cm) will not shine and will soil and appear to stain from soiling.
- Cambria installation is optimized when walls and cabinets are properly prepared for installation. This includes but is not limited to structurally sound, straight, level and square walls and cabinets, lack of which may cause poor installation and poor seam fit, or inconsistent countertop overhang and placement.
- Cambria installation does not include qualification of any sink or stove cutouts (any cutouts), faucet hole locations or cabinet sizes. Cambria IS NOT responsible for verifying if sinks, stove or other cutout appliances, cabinets and faucet hole locations fit together well, or at all. This is the responsibility of the owner, general contractor, or the like. Cambria will fabricate cutouts per supplied model/template information. Cambria IS NOT responsible for the accuracy of the information provided.
